Safe Superintelligence (SSI) is an artificial intelligence startup co-founded by Ilya Sutskever, Daniel Gross, and Daniel Levy. It has managed to accomplish that feat at a reported $32 billion valuation. This milestone comes after the company’s timely and successful acquisition of $2 billion in funding, mainly led by Greenoaks. To promote the invention of a safe superintelligence, SSI’s stated mission aligns with Sutskever’s personal hopes for the future of AI.

Founded in May 2024 after Sutskever’s departure from OpenAI, SSI has quickly positioned itself as a key player in the AI industry. The company’s founders have a mutual desire to make sure that super-intelligent AI is created in a responsible and safe manner. For all the ambition and zeal, SSI’s core product is still being developed, and little about it has been publicly shared.

The company’s website is still in development. It has a well-crafted mission statement that succinctly explains its aims to develop a beneficial superintelligence. This emphasis on safety further reflects the founders’ desire to prevent harmful outcomes from new areas of AI development.

Before this latest funding round, SSI had already raised $1 billion, a reflection of deep and growing investor enthusiasm for its mission. Advocacy Reports suggested conversations for a second round of $1 billion were occurring. That happened right before they won their most recent $2 billion investment. Yet against that backdrop, SSI has been conspicuously quiet on their new infusion of funding, including shedding any light on what it all means for the future.

Ilya Sutskever, known for his pivotal role in AI research, previously attempted to lead a controversial ousting of OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman. Following an extreme internal struggle, Sutskever took a courageous step to create SSI. This move represents a notable acceleration of his own career path and aspirations within the rapidly evolving AI space.

As SSI continues to develop its product and solidify its position in the market, industry observers will be closely monitoring its progress and the implications of its work on the future of artificial intelligence.
