CommanderAI recently closed a $5 million seed funding round led by ABB Technology Ventures. This accomplishment is a huge leap toward WasteWise’s goal of shaking up the waste management industry. The round was led by 11 Tribes Ventures, with participation from Watchfire Ventures, Gaingels, and Rad Fund. This significant round of capital will allow the company to expand its new sales team. It will accelerate the development of its market-leading CRM and sales prospecting platform.

He is the founder of CommanderAI, established in early 2024. Backed by more than 20 years of experience in the waste management sector, he is dedicated to ensuring customized solutions for waste haulers and industrial services providers. The platform is designed to cater to businesses of all sizes, from those operating a single truck to large enterprises. Meanwhile, only a handful—less than ten—of active software providers are truly equipped to serve this niche market. CommanderAI is here to help bridge that darn big gap!

In 2024, the U.S. waste management industry generated more than $100 billion in revenues. This encouraging number illustrates just how much opportunity and ingenuity exist within the industry. CommanderAI is looking to make the most of this demand by focusing on mid-to-large regional players that are more well positioned to see strong long-term operational efficiencies.

David Berg’s waste management odyssey all began when, as a young man, he took a job as the first employee at Brattle Motors in Ohio. To get up to speed on the industry, he drove an empty garbage truck nationwide. His hands-on experience gives him a unique perspective on the challenges waste management companies are facing today.

Berg expressed his vision for CommanderAI, stating, “We’d like to have 30% of the waste management industry using CommanderAI as their lead source of AI tooling and really any sort of tooling within their tech stack.” In doing so, he underscored the criticality of appropriate segmentation of data. This new approach allows companies to be more ambitious than ever before.

As a result, that data is publicly available on the web. The work of segmenting and repurposing it to actually make it useful took a considerable effort. Berg reflected on the challenges encountered in building their platform.

“The way that we’re approaching it to them is, ‘Hey, look, we know you have a way of selling. You’ve been doing this for 20 plus years. All we’re here to do is help you sell more efficiently,’” Berg noted.

With this latest capital, CommanderAI is well positioned to build a more robust suite of products. The team wants to incorporate cutting-edge features such as mapping, marketing, and routing features. These enhancements will provide users with an expanded and robust set of tools tailored to their unique waste management goals. This includes provisions for more comprehensive dumpster rental options and expanded industrial recycling services.

As Berg leads the charge against a backdrop of limited competition, CommanderAI’s innovative solutions are set to disrupt traditional practices in the waste management sector. The combination of advanced CRM capabilities and a deep understanding of industry dynamics positions CommanderAI as a formidable contender in a largely underserved market.
