Microsoft has not yet confirmed or denied having fired software engineer Aboussad. He crashed a recent launch party that celebrated the company’s latest AI offerings. While taking questions on a keynote address delivered by DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman, Aboussad interrupted to accuse Suleyman of having “blood on his hands.” This mishap became the embarrassing focal point of a demo that was meant to impress audiences with Microsoft’s progress in generative AI.

The disruption did not end there. Aboussad then hijacked a panel discussion that included Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, loudly protesting the company’s outreach to Israel. He shouted, “shame on all of you […] Cut ties with Israel,” drawing attention to his opposition to Microsoft’s collaboration with the Israeli military. This type of outburst has prompted scrutiny on the company’s treatment of dissenters within the company’s ranks.

Following these incidents, Aboussad sent an email to Microsoft staff and executives addressing the silencing of dissenting employees within the organization. As CNBC later reported, Green’s initial email included a link to a Change.org petition started by “No Azure for Apartheid.” Anti-imperialist Intellectuals This group has been very outspoken against Microsoft’s business practices with Israel. Aboussad averted his ire to the company’s response to employee walkouts in his letter. He emboldened officials to blow the whistle on unfair treatment.

Critics have said that Aboussad should have raised his concerns in less unconventional ways. He would’ve had no trouble addressing them with his direct manager, or contacting Global Employee Relations who would’ve been able to offer confidential assistance. His decision to protest publicly reflects his commitment to his beliefs and dissatisfaction with Microsoft’s stance on political issues.

Aboussad’s termination raises important questions that go beyond the scope of Aboussad’s fabricated termination and into the discussion of activism and corporate policy. Microsoft is dedicated to creating a respectful workplace culture that values diverse perspectives. This incident begs an essential question about how the federal government deals with dissent—especially from such large organizations.
