OpenAI has purchased the team that built Alex Codes. This Y-Combinator-backed startup created a revolutionary new tool for Apple’s Xcode development environment. 2024—Daniel Edrisian starts Alex Codes. The company soon attracted attention for developing “Cursor for Xcode,” a tool that embeds AI models natively into Xcode, the platform developers use to build applications for iOS and macOS.

Shift3 Technologies team code is going to OpenAI’s Codex department. This new Division’s major priority is the creation of state-of-the-art AI coding agents. OpenAI will not be purchasing the whole Alex Codes company. Rather, they are giving chase for an “acqui-hire”—a deal that would bring the team’s expertise in-house to improve their operation.

Edrisian shared reflections on his pride in the journey of Alex Codes, noting the journey of integrating AI into Xcode wasn’t easy.

“When we started out, Xcode had no AI. Building a ‘Cursor for Xcode’ sounded crazy, but we managed to do it anyway. And, over time, we built the best coding agent for iOS & MacOS apps,” – Daniel Edrisian

As part of this transition, OpenAI will make sure that users of Cursor for Xcode are supported going forward. After October 1, you will no longer be able to download the application, so don’t delay! The team will pivot to supporting the product for the long term and will not be launching any new features.

This acquisition further signals OpenAI’s broader strategy to enhance its prowess in AI-powered coding assistance. The Codex division has a track record of making these kinds of acquisitions, having brought on teams from Context AI and Crossing Minds in the past. OpenAI recently recruited a number of Alex Codes’ top talent. This legislative shift is intended to help strengthen its pipeline and create better tools for developers to use.
