Tavily, a burgeoning startup founded by data scientist Rotem Weiss, has successfully raised $25 million to develop and provide advanced search tools for AI agents. Tavily only launched a little over a year ago, with origins that stemmed from an open-source project known as GPT Researcher. This award-winning smart cities project was produced in 2023. This effort proved incredibly popular, quickly receiving almost 20,000 stars on GitHub, a testament to the enthusiasm and interest from the developer community.

The launch of Tavily comes in the wake of the introduction of web search capabilities by ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs). This change in the marketplace has created a fierce competitive landscape. Companies like Exa are on the cutting edge, recently raising $17m in Series A funding from notable investors including Lightspeed, Nvidia, and Y Combinator. Tavily’s leadership believes that its innovative approach will allow it to carve out a significant niche in this rapidly evolving landscape.

TechCrunch venture capital and startups reporter Marina Temkin has been tracking Tavily’s story every step of the way. As per her analysis, the firm’s advanced capacity to seamlessly align AI features with core web search functionalities gives it a strong competitive advantage over rivals.

George Mathew, managing director at Insight Partners and an investor in Tavily, spoke to the critical role of governance in the sector. He urged for transparent, equitable, and ethical practices when developing AI. He stated:

“Governance, risk and compliance at the enterprise is so important now, and if you just let that happen, it’s just going to be the wild, wild west.” – George Mathew

Tavily’s funding will help it grow its tooling and further distill its product line to most effectively power AI agents. As the industry continues to develop, Tavily is at the forefront solving issues in AI governance and generative AI compliance. Through these efforts, we hope to remain on the cutting edge of innovation.

Their next TC event in San Francisco is October 27-29, 2025. Tavily hopes to leverage this opportunity to demonstrate its progress and attract new partners and investors.
