Cursor, an AI coding assistant, has continued its aggressive expansion strategy by acquiring Graphite, a startup specializing in AI-driven code review and debugging solutions. This acquisition follows a string of smart acquisitions. These moves seek to increase Cursor’s tech capabilities and fortify its position in the competitive coding assistance market.

Michael Truell, co-founder and CEO of Cursor first met Graphite’s co-founders—Merrill Lutsky, Greg Foster, and Thomas Reimers—while serving as a Neo Scholar, himself. This symbiotic relationship flourished before he officially started Cursor. The Neo program, managed by Ali Partovi’s early-stage venture firm, has cultivated a network of innovative entrepreneurs and investors, providing valuable support for emerging technology companies.

That’s just the latest talent-heavy deal by Cursor, which acquired Growth by Design, a tech recruiting strategy company, last month. Additionally, in July, the company acquired talent from Koala, an AI-powered CRM startup, for a noteworthy post-money valuation of $129 million. The acquisition of Anysphere is further proof of Cursor’s relentless mission to expand its portfolio and expertise in creating unique solutions within the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Interestingly, Cursor has some of the same backers as Graphite — including major firms like Accel and Andreessen Horowitz. This similarity deepens the connection between the two firms. It’s a clear indicator of the investment community’s confidence of Cursor’s ability to scale their growth trajectory. As of November, Cursor had grown to a valuation of $29 billion, highlighting the furious pace of growth in this corner of the technology sector.

Cursor’s acquisitions are widely regarded as a significant challenge to GitHub Copilot, a leading player in the AI coding assistant space. Cursor combines Graphite’s leading-edge technology to differentiate itself across the market. Making this change improves overall create code user experience.
