Helion Secures Strategic Deal with OpenAI to Propel Fusion Energy Goals

Helion, one of the world’s leading fusion startups, is already causing a significant splash on an industry-changing level with its recent strategic agreement with OpenAI. Founded with the mission of changing the way the world produces energy, Helion is working to build the world’s first commercial fusion reactors. Well … notable investors such as Sam Altman, Mitril, Lightspeed and SoftBank have funded the little startup. Last year, it successfully raised an eye-popping $425 million to pursue its bold, newgoing ambitions.

Helion’s partnership with OpenAI guarantees 12.5% of the company’s future production, a deal that could yield five gigawatts of energy by 2030 and expand to 50 gigawatts by 2035. This major commitment is a testament to the shared vision of both companies to drive sustainable energy solutions. In addition, Microsoft has signed a similar agreement with Helion, expecting to buy power from them starting in 2028.

Much of Helion’s operations hang in the balance on the success of the Polaris prototype. It is being tested right now as the company prepares for its transition to commercial power generation. The nascent startup hopes to develop its first commercial-scale reactor by 2028. Each of those reactors will produce a phenomenal 50 megawatts of electricity.

Helion is committed to deliver a total of five gigawatts of energy by 2030. To achieve this gargantuan target, the utility would need to build about 800 reactors. The extent of its dreams increases spectacularly once you factor in the 2035 target, which requires a further 7,200 reactors on top. With building such large infrastructure a reality, it drives the need and the creative solutions of unique energy advances in meeting increasing international power needs.

Helion’s reactor uses a unique hourglass-shaped design that creates optimal conditions for fast fusion reactions to occur. It’s worth noting that earlier this year, Helion crossed an important milestone. They’ve successfully created plasmas inside their reactor, recently breaking records of 150 million degrees Celsius. For the moment, the company is aiming for 200 million degrees Celsius, the temperature needed to cross the threshold for commercial viability.

To push fusion fuel particles toward each other within the reactor, Helion uses complex magnetic fields. This groundbreaking tool dramatically boosts efficiency while showcasing Helion’s pioneering spirit and leadership in developing the world’s first fusion-powered energy source.
