Cursor, an innovative AI coding startup formerly known as Anysphere, is reportedly in discussions to secure over $2 billion in new funding. Co-founded in 2022 by a group of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students—Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Aman Sanger—Cursor has witnessed significant growth in recent months. Such a positive reception to Crunchbase’s upcoming financing round would almost double the startup’s last public valuation of $29.3 billion.

Cursor had raised attention-grabbing $2 billion annualized revenue back in February when the company made its announcement. Given the company’s current growth trajectory this figure will probably be tripled in the next 10 months. By the end of 2026, revenue projections yield an annualized revenue run rate of more than $6 billion. This boom in revenue growth gives an insight into the surging demand for AI coding solutions from large enterprises.

Even with this incredible financial success, Cursor’s business model is deeply problematic. Today the company is reportedly generating strong gross margins, including from large enterprise sales. Yet despite all of this, it continues to lose from individual developer accounts. Until very recently, Cursor was running at negative gross margins, highlighting the need for further capital to continue its rapid growth.

It’s likely that the next funding round will be oversubscribed with strategic investors vying for their chance to invest, and a likely participant would be Nvidia. This partnership with Nvidia might be enough to put Cursor on the cutting edge of the market and help it truly take off in this crowded AI scene. That would be a rapid increase in investor interest given that the last funding round was only five months ago.

Though Cursor seems to be on the verge of a giant influx of capital, the company’s leadership is more concerned with keeping the momentum going. The expected funding will provide a huge infusion to its bottom line. It will push the continued expansion of its AI coding assistant. This strategic growth plan furthers Cursor’s mission to revolutionize the state of coding. It seeks to provide powerful capabilities for developers and enterprises.
