Eclipse Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on industrial innovation, has just closed an eye popping new fund of $1.3 billion. This fund is focused on cultivating and nurturing emerging startups in the specialized and dynamic new field of “physical AI.” This most recent investment further highlights the firm’s deliberate shift to focus on technologies that extend our digital reach into the physical world.

The new fund is divided into two significant components: a $591 million early-stage incubation fund and another fund tailored for growth-oriented startups. Over the past few years, Eclipse’s median deal size has surged, reflecting its commitment to investing more heavily in the physical realm. Partner Jiten Behl echoed this sentiment when he said, “We have to be looking forward to the next big technological wave. This intelligent era is when much deeper intelligence truly delivers real answers to real life issues.

“Over the last two decades, we’ve seen multiple waves of innovation,” – Jiten Behl

Eclipse’s investment strategy sharply reflects its vision of creating a sustainable ecosystem of startups across intersecting disciplines. The firm admits it’s not the first to come up with the idea of physical AI. It does seek to generate positive spillovers across portfolio companies, challenging them to collaborate directly and leverage each other’s networks.

As technology continues to evolve and demand increases, Behl stresses the importance of this new age. At its core, it is driven by a combination of ingenuity, transformative technological advances, and robust policy environments. He emphasizes that Eclipse focuses on startups innovating within the creative industries. This emphasis on the power of collaboration builds the kind of connective tissue that can lead to creative, transformative solutions.

“This is the first time where stuff is going to move from our screens into the physical world; we’re going to see advanced levels of intelligence, along with actual actions, in terms of solving problems in the real, physical world,” – Jiten Behl

The firm is energized to incubate a handful of those startups inside its own four walls. This will help seed innovative ideas that lead to smart solutions ready for the market. Success will require finding partnerships between these nascent companies and that will be the challenge, according to Behl to healthy growth and establishing their place in the market.

“Scale is so important, and if you can put it together in a way where companies partner early on to build scale, to build proof points, and it just then enables them to go after the next set of demand,” – Jiten Behl

Eclipse Ventures’ smart, forward-looking strategy has been borne out through a growing realization of the fundamental role that physical AI will play as industries are transformed. Those investments are just starting to unlock some really cool innovations. Equitably deployed, they will enhance our technological aptitude and accelerate our response to mounting crises in the physical world.
