Linktree, the widely used link in bio tool, has been down in India for the last few days. This mandated outage has caused a serious uproar among its users. The abrupt removal of Linktree from the Indian internet surprised users and the company as well. The outage initially came to our attention when the site went down with a notice. The suit argued that the Indian government’s actions amounted to a denial of access.
Linktree’s co-founder and CEO Alex Zaccaria responded to the outcry by admitting that the company messed up and it is currently working to address the issue. Linktree confirmed the service outage in India in a post Thursday on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. They are dedicated to ensuring that they are identifying the root cause and addressing the issue.
The timing of the outage is especially ironic since Linktree recently boasted about reaching a billion clicks and achieving unicorn status. The start-up reached unicorn status in 2022 and joined the 50 million user club in 2024. As a result, India has quickly become an important market for Linktree, being its fifth-largest market by traffic. In July, Linktree captured nearly 7.3 million visits originating from India. This great figure accounted for 3.5% of its overall global traffic, as per Similarweb data.
Even with the outage, Linktree is still experiencing strong traffic in several other markets. The United States tops the list with 48.5 million. Indonesia comes in a close second with 32.3 million, and Brazil rounds out the top three with 30.8 million international visits. The United Kingdom comes in fourth place, bringing in 9.4 million visits. The Indian market’s significance cannot be understated, as it plays a crucial role in Linktree’s overall user engagement.
According to reports, the outage affects all of India’s major networks. It’s not even statutorily limited to any particular ISP. This large-scale effect has completely locked out users from accessing the website itself and therefore the Linktree app completely.
